The European Voluntary Service is framed in the home that BASIDA manage at Aranjuez’s home, as we said previously, it was the first rises in 1990 in the nearby of Aranjuez due to the lack of a social and institutional answer to the HIV carriers because of the lack and the insufficiency of Official Services, of the non-existence of a policy of specific plans to face this problem.

They provide 5 meals a day: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner. Food can be adapted to the needs of the voluntary / a: vegetarian, food intolerances, etc.

Volunteers will be hosted in a room into the hosting house of Basida and they will have one bedroom and a bathroom which can be enjoyed individually or shared with other volunteer.

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers:

All the staff who makes up the Therapeutic Team of BASIDA- Aranjuez is formed by voluntary staff without being no contracted staff. From the beginning of the activity and as part of the ideology and of the philosophy of the body is to know how to coordinate the voluntary enlistment and unselfish dedication with the professionalism and the training; the social quality with a personalized, integral and humanized attention. Therefore the volunteering is the driving-force which moves each one of the programmes and projects and which makes the execution of all the activities possible which carry out from the different departments. In the Hosting Home for people with AIDS of Aranjuez there is a coordinator of volunteering who will be responsible for accompanying and counselling volunteers and will also be the contact point between the therapeutic team and the volunteer.

Although the staff are volunteers, they are all professionals in their field: psychologists, therapists, movement therapists, nurses, doctors. They way of life and profession is done in an altruist way, dedicated to others. The people working in the foundation are founding members who decided to start this project when they saw the lacks of society. Although they are volunteers, they are also professionals in their work and it is them who provide guidance to EVS volunteers. The latter have a different responsibility, as they are support to the staff. In the home of Aranjuez, they will have a mentor who will guide them specifically in the tasks volunteers carry out.

Volunteers may participate in all activities in the professional departments previously mentioned, always taking into account factors such as the characteristics of the volunteer, the previous professional training and the personal preferences; considering these aspects as fundamental to get the volunteer to integrate and to adapt to the dynamics of the hosting home and at the same time he/she gets to get on with the group.

Volunteers will collaborate a maximun of 35 hours per week from Monday to Friday. The schedule time will be principally during the morning although it will be depend of the current necessities.

Some of the most frequent activities to be carried out by the volunteers are:

- Attendance to sick people and to those who are in bed.

- Help in the activities of physical rehabilitation and of occupational therapy for their cognitive rehabilitation.

- Participation in workshops (carpentry, gardening, painting…)

- Participation in the educative department: workshop of adult literacy, out-of-school support to children who live in the hosting home.

- Collaboration with organization of workshops and occupational activities: magazine, theatre, computer science, yoga and relaxation, sport activities,… workshop.

- Collaboration with organization of workshops and leisure activities (excursions, cultural activities,…)

- The EVS volunteers will participate with the rest of the volunteers in the daily home activities.

Learning Opportunities

The opportunity of living in the hosting homes and having a direct experience of AIDS issues and consume of drugs enables these youth to become sensitive with the people with this illness and makes them adopt tolerance and solidarity attitudes in their daily life and acquire social and relation skills which promotes in them a civic awareness and commitment with the society and their surroundings. Furthermore, they receive objective and ideal information which makes them understand prevention and self-responsibility as essential to fight these two problems.

All the time, during the development of the activities and tasks, volunteers will be accompanied and supervised by the professionals who are responsible and coordinate the departments, and who will favour the integration of the volunteer in the centre dynamics.

During the stay of the volunteer, and depending on the time of the year in which they participate and the number of volunteers participating at the moment (also from other programmes), the Training Course "Attention skills and Relation with AIDS-HIV People and Drug Addicts" will be given, in which the following aspects are tackled:

1. AIDS and Preventive Measures.

2. ABC of the Drugs.

3. Cares of the AIDS-HIV person.

4. Psychology and Relation Skills with HIV-AIDS People.

5. Social Pathology in HIV-AIDS.

6. Social Labour in HIV-AIDS.

It is important to offer to the volunteer who chooses to carry out his/her voluntary action in our association, a basic and specific training which from a formative and interdisciplinary action tackles in a global and integral way the multiple aspects we have to take into account if we want to give a therapeutic and integrating answer at social level to those complex problems.

In case this course is given (it is usually done in summer), it will include 30 hours of theory and it will be complemented with a practical part, cooperating for some hours a day in the different programs and activities we carry out in our projects.

Regarding the learning and the improvement of Spanish the volunteers who participate in the European voluntary enlistment program will receive during the months of voluntary enlistment lessons the coordinator organization manages.

Volunteers Role

As we said, BASIDA-Aranjuez is an organisation formed exclusively by volunteers. The participation of EVS volunteers gives an added value to the voluntary activity. They can provide an intercultural and European dimension.
