Crocevia dei Popoli, is a volunteering association, settled in Piombino (in Tuscany Region).

The association is based in a House called “House Crocevia dei Popoli”, open since 1997 (which used to be an elementary school belonging to the Diocesan Caritas)

Currently the House Crocevia dei Popoli is both the base of Crocevia dei Popoli Association and the Diocesan Caritas (a Catholic organization promoting peace, development and Justice).  Caritas as well as Crocevia Dei Popoli Association aim to make a difference in the lives of people living with poverty or injustice.

The House Crocevia dei Popoli is a Hosting house for disadvantaged people and a Centre of Education to peace, mondialization, multiculturalism and new lifestyles.

The organization is located 5 kms far from the centre of the city of Piombino.

People & Volunteers

Currently Crocevia dei Popoli’s main activities are run in close cooperation with the Diocesan Caritas. Among the The most important activities we can mention:

  • Education/Activities in kindergarten and summer camps for kids;
  • Education in elementary and middle schools (October-June, students from 6 up to 14 years old). Our Education staff provide resources and presentations for schools, visit schools, conduct leadership-training days, and encourage action for a more peaceful world. The education activities will be focused on several topics such as Citizenship, Immigration, Peace, Respect for “The Other”, Environment protection…
  • Organization of Youth leisure activities for local youngsters of Piombino or close cities;
  • Training of Italian volunteers attending the Regional and National Civil Service for our organization and for the municipality of Piombino;
  • Training of social workers and volunteers of Caritas and of Catholic civic pastoral volunteeering;
  • We act also as the operating centre for the GREM (Regional Group for Education for Multiculturalism and New Lifestyles);
  • We also support Caritas in social and educational projects carried in the local prisons.
  • Listening Centre for disadvantaged people (homeless, families with economic problems, youngsters coming for difficult urban areas or with difficult familiar background);
  • Dresses and food distribution to poor families or homeless people.

Volunteers’ main activities

The volunteers will have the chance of being involved in some or all the mentioned activities, depending on their level of Italian, the time of the year they arrive and their interests and personal attitudes. It is important to underline that most of volunteers are usually involved in educational activities with kids attending , local kidergartens.

Location

Piombino is an Italian townand “comune” of nearly 35,000 inhabitants in the province of Livorno (Tuscany). It lies on the border between the Ligurian Sea and theTyrrhenian Sea, in front of Elba Island and at the Northern side of Maremma.

Piombino has schools, gymnasia (middle schools), lyceums (high schools), churches, banks, parks and squares. In the locality of Punta Falcone is an astronomical observatory, created in 1976.

Working hours

The volunteer will work about 5-7 hours every day from Monday to Friday, and will have 2 days off every week. The weekly working time is 25- 35 hours.

The timetable will be set up according to the volunteer’s skills/preferences and according to the activities proposed. For example, as most of volunteers will be involved in activities with kids in local kidergaten or local elemenatry schools , they will be usually working from: 8-8,30 to 13-00, some days and from 8-8,30 to 16,00 other days.

We invite the volunteers to be flexible concering working shifts and they will have a great learing experience!

Days off

The volunters will have two free days a week  (usually Saturdays and Sundays) and two free days a month (for projects of minimum 4 weeks).

Accommodation

The hosting House, Crocevia dei Popoli, is a nice building surrounded by a wide fenced garden, completely conceived to be used by groups of people The volunteers will share the spaces of the house with the others potential people living in the house.

The house is structured in this way: on the first floor there are one room for the volunteers with 4 beds, and  bathroom only for volunteers and  a large living room conceived for meetings and trainings, a small and discreet chapel, a shared kitchen and a laundry.

Close to that flat there is another smaller flat (completely separated) which hosts form times to times  disadvantaged families.

On the second floor there is another flat where the usually the project coordintor is supposed to live.

The volunteers will be living in a shared room and will have their own bathroom, while the kitchen and the living room will be shared with the other people of the whole building.

Concerning the accommodation, the House is fully equipped with sheets, duvet, blankets, towels and there is also a common washing machine. The is a good heating system active on winter time (no air conditioning). In the House there is Wi-Fi. 

Food

The volunteer will be also provided with food: 3 meals per day. Concerning food, the habit of the house is to eat seasonal products when possible, coming from the local territory: vegetables, fruits, fish, cheese ect. Moreover, we like purchasing products of the Fair and Solidarity Trade.

Concerning the accommodation, the House is fully equipped with sheets, duvet, blankets, towels and there is also a common washing machine.

Rules

The volunteers are requested to be responsible to maintain the House clean and to tidy up their own private room. They are also  requested to like the communitarian way of life of the House with many shared rooms.

Transports

The House is not in the city centre and it is surrounded by green fields, but Piombino centre is reachable by buses, in about 10 minutes. To reach closer towns places. Volunteers might be provided with a bicycle to go around.
